A fine automatic watch should be ready when the occasion calls for it, whether that is a morning meeting, a black-tie dinner or a weekend away. To choose winder rotation settings correctly is not about keeping a watch in constant motion. It is about matching a considered storage routine to the needs of a particular calibre.
The right programme preserves convenience while avoiding unnecessary activity. Set too low, and the watch may stop between wears. Set too high, and the winder may run more than the movement requires. For collectors with several watches, that distinction turns a handsome display piece into a genuinely useful part of long-term ownership.
Choose winder rotation settings from the movement
Every automatic movement has a winding system designed around a rotor, the weighted component that turns with the movement of the wrist. As it rotates, it winds the mainspring. A watch winder simply recreates enough of that motion to maintain the power reserve while the watch is resting.
The manufacturer’s recommendation is always the best starting point. Many brands publish the preferred direction and turns per day, often abbreviated to TPD, for their movements. If those details are available in the owner’s documentation or from an authorised retailer, follow them rather than relying on a generic setting.
Where the specification is unavailable, the movement reference is more useful than the name on the dial. A single watchmaker may use different calibres across a collection, and a familiar model can be fitted with a revised movement from one production year to the next. The calibre number is often found in the documentation, on the movement itself, or through a reputable watchmaker.
A winder is especially worthwhile for watches with perpetual calendars, annual calendars, moonphase displays or multiple time zones. Resetting these complications after a watch has stopped can be time-consuming and, on some models, should be done with care. Rotation direction: clockwise, anti-clockwise or both
Winders commonly offer clockwise, anti-clockwise and bidirectional programmes. These settings describe the direction in which the watch turns as viewed from the front of the winder.
Some movements wind efficiently in only one direction. Others wind in either direction, and a bidirectional setting can suit them well. It is tempting to assume that bidirectional is a universal solution, but it is not always the most precise one. If a movement is designed to wind in one direction only, half of a bidirectional programme may contribute little or no winding.
When the winding direction is unknown, begin with a conservative bidirectional setting at a moderate TPD. This is often a sensible interim choice for widely used automatic movements, but it should not replace proper identification where the watch is valuable, vintage or technically complex. Observe whether the watch maintains power over several days without being worn, then adjust only if necessary.
Avoid treating the rotor’s audible movement as a diagnostic tool. Rotor noise, resistance and winding efficiency vary by calibre, case construction and age. If there is any concern about performance, particularly with a vintage piece, consult a qualified watchmaker rather than experimenting with prolonged, high-speed cycles.
Why direction matters less than the correct programme
A suitable direction alone does not guarantee that a watch remains wound. A unidirectional movement placed on the correct setting still needs sufficient daily rotation, while a bidirectional movement may be over-served by a programme with excessive TPD. Direction and daily rotation should be considered together.
The aim is not maximum winding. Automatic watches are engineered with a slipping bridle that prevents the mainspring from being conventionally overwound once fully tensioned. Even so, there is little elegance in running a watch continuously when a measured programme will achieve the same result. A winder should mimic normal ownership, not turn storage into needless mechanical activity.
Understanding turns per day
TPD is the approximate number of rotations a winder completes over 24 hours. Most quality winders distribute these turns across rest intervals rather than spinning without pause. Those pauses are desirable: they create a calmer operating rhythm and help the watch settle between cycles.
Many modern automatic watches perform well within a broad middle range, often around 650 to 900 TPD. That range is a useful reference point, not a prescription. Some movements need fewer turns; others, particularly certain larger or more demanding calibres, may need more. The correct number depends on the winding system, power reserve, condition of the movement and how often the watch leaves the winder for wrist time.
Start at the lowest setting that is appropriate for the known movement specification. Give the watch several days on the programme, preferably without wearing it during the test period. If it consistently remains running and maintains its functions, there is no reason to increase the TPD. If it stops before the next intended wear, increase gradually rather than jumping straight to the highest setting.
This approach is particularly useful when a manufacturer gives a range rather than a single figure. Begin at the lower end, then allow real-world performance to guide a small adjustment. A collector’s routine matters too. A watch worn twice a week requires a different approach from one left displayed for a month.
A practical method for setting a watch winder
Before placing a watch in a winder, wind it manually where the manufacturer permits. Around 20 to 30 turns of the crown is often enough to give an automatic movement a proper initial charge, although the watch’s own instructions take priority. This avoids asking the winder to bring a fully depleted mainspring up to power from the outset.
Set the recommended direction first, then select the lowest suitable TPD. Ensure the watch is secured on a properly sized cushion. A bracelet should not be forced tightly around a large pillow, and a leather strap should not be compressed beyond its natural curve. The purpose of a well-designed holder is to support the watch securely without placing avoidable strain on the clasp, strap or case.
Keep a brief record for each watch if the collection includes several movements. A discreet note of calibre, direction, TPD and date of last adjustment prevents repeated guesswork. This is particularly valuable in a cabinet containing watches from different brands, eras and complication levels.
For a collection that changes frequently, programmable winders offer a more refined solution than one fixed setting for every watch. Individual control allows a dress watch, a sports model and a complicated calendar watch to follow programmes suited to their respective movements. It is a small detail, but serious collections are built around such details.
When not to use a winder
A watch winder is not required for every automatic watch. If a simple watch is worn regularly, wrist movement will do the work. If it is worn only occasionally and takes moments to set, allowing it to stop may be the more sensible choice.
Vintage watches deserve additional restraint. Older lubricants, worn rotor bearings and unknown service history can make constant winding less advisable. The same applies to any watch showing unreliable timekeeping, an unusually short power reserve or resistance while hand-winding. Storage cannot compensate for a movement that needs attention.
Manual-wind watches should never be placed in a winder. Nor should quartz watches, unless the unit is being used purely as a static display and its rotation is disabled. A winder is a specialist instrument, not a general-purpose watch stand.
Storage conditions still matter
Correct rotation settings are only one part of responsible watch care. A winder should sit on a stable surface, away from persistent vibration, direct sunlight, damp conditions and strong magnetic sources. Avoid placing it beside loudspeakers, magnetic charging equipment or household devices that may create unnecessary exposure.
For higher-value collections, consider the wider setting in which the winder is used.
