A watch winder safe does two jobs in one. It locks your watches away, and it keeps your automatics wound while they’re in there.

Choose a leather safe with fingerprint, PIN or key entry for your home, or step up to a Grade 1 to Grade 5 insurance-rated safe for a more valuable collection. Sizes hold 8 to 24 watches, and delivery is free in the UK. We also offer an installation service for the rated safes.

Watch safe or watch winder safe?

A plain watch safe stores your watches and keeps them secure. A watch winder safe does the same, but each slot has a winder built in. If you own automatic watches and don’t wear them daily, the winder version means they’re running and ready when you open the door. Quartz watches don’t need winding, so a standard safe or a luxury watch box works for those.

Leather safes for home use

Our Tempus 8 leather safes hold 8 watches in black, brown, or black with a red interior. You can open them with a fingerprint, a PIN or a key. They’re a good fit for a smaller collection kept at home. If you have valuable pieces, ask your insurer what level of security they require before you buy.

What do the insurance grades mean?

Our rated safes run from Grade 1 to Grade 5. Each grade is linked to a level of insurance cover, from £100,000 for Grade 1 up to £1,000,000 for Grade 5. In simple terms, the higher the grade, the harder the safe is to break into, and the more cover your insurer is likely to give. Your insurer has the final say, so check their requirements for the total value of your watches.

Choosing the right size

Count your automatic watches, add a few spare slots, and choose from 8, 12, 22 or 24 watch models. Larger rated safes include drawers for straps, tools and watch boxes, and many have LED lighting inside, so you can see your collection properly when you open the door.

Installation

A rated safe needs to be fitted properly to do its job. Our installation service is available for the insurance-grade safes, so it’s fitted correctly from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Tempus watch winders, storage and ordering.

What is a watch winder safe?

It's a safe with a watch winder built into each slot. It keeps your watches secure and keeps your automatics wound at the same time. For example, you can set one slot to 650 TPD bi-directional for your Rolex Submariner and another to 800 TPD clockwise for your Patek Philippe Nautilus.

Do I need an insurance-rated safe?

If your collection is valuable, yes. Insurers often require a rated safe once watches pass a certain value — check your policy. Our cash-rated safes are tested and certified to recognised security grades, from £100,000 to £1,000,000 cover.

What do the safe grades mean?

Grades 1 to 5 show how much insurance cover a safe is rated for. Grade 1 is rated for £100,000 and Grade 5 for £1,000,000. The higher the grade, the stronger the safe and the more valuable the contents it can protect.

What lock options are available?

Our leather safes open with a fingerprint, PIN, or key. The insurance-rated safes use a digital keypad with emergency override. All locking mechanisms are covered by our 3-year warranty.

How many watches can a winder safe hold?

Between 8 and 24, depending on the model. Choose one with a couple of spare slots so your collection has room to grow. Each winder slot has independent rotation settings — perfect for mixing a 650 TPD Omega Speedmaster with an 800 TPD IWC Portugieser.

Can you install the safe for me?

Yes. We offer an insurance-grade safe installation service that you can add to your order. Professional installation ensures your safe meets the requirements for insurance cover.

What is a watch winder, and how does it work?

A watch winder is a device that gently rotates an automatic watch to help keep its movement wound while it is not being worn. Automatic watches use a rotor to wind the mainspring, and a watch winder provides movement that can help maintain their power reserve.

Do I need a watch winder for my automatic watch?

A watch winder is optional rather than essential. It is most useful if you rotate between several automatic watches or want to reduce how often you reset the time and calendar after a watch stops. A watch can also be allowed to stop and then wound and set according to its manufacturer's instructions. Explore our range in the watch winders collection.

Can a watch winder be used with any watch?

Watch winders are designed for automatic mechanical watches. Standard quartz watches do not need winding, and a winder cannot wind a traditional manual-wind watch. For an automatic watch, check the manufacturer's recommended winding direction and turns per day before choosing your settings.

What does turns per day (TPD) mean on a watch winder?

Turns per day, often shortened to TPD, describes the number of rotations a watch winder makes over a day. Different automatic movements have different winding requirements, so use your watch manufacturer's guidance rather than assuming one setting suits every watch. Tempus winders offer programmable TPD settings to match your specific movement.

Which winding direction should I choose?

Automatic watch movements may wind clockwise, counterclockwise or in both directions. Choose a watch winder with settings that match your watch's requirements. If you are unsure, check with the watch manufacturer or an authorised service centre.

Are Tempus watch winders noisy?

No. Tempus watch winders use quiet precision motors designed to run whisper-quiet, making them suitable for a bedroom or office. Many of our customers keep their winders on a nightstand without any disturbance.

How do I choose a watch winder for my collection?

Start with the number of automatic watches you want to keep wound, then check winding settings, cushion fit, power options and dimensions. For a collection containing different movements, look for independently adjustable settings so each watch can receive the appropriate winding programme. Browse by capacity in our watch winders collection.

What is the difference between a watch winder and a watch box?

A watch winder rotates automatic watches to help keep them wound. A watch box provides organised storage without winding the movement. Choose a winder for convenience between wears, or a watch box when your priority is storing and displaying your collection. See our luxury watch boxes for storage options.

What should I look for in a watch travel case?

Look for a secure closure, a suitable fit and compartments that keep watches separated. Check that the case accommodates your watches' case sizes and straps or bracelets. A travel case can help protect against everyday knocks and scratches, but it should not be treated as theft protection. Our watch cases and travel rolls are designed for exactly this.

What should I check before buying a safe for luxury watches?

Check the safe's security certification, dimensions, installation requirements and storage capacity. If it includes watch winders, also check their settings and power requirements. Before buying, ask your insurer whether the specific safe and its installation meet the requirements for your collection. A safe's grade alone does not guarantee insurance cover. Explore our watch winder safes.

Do you sell watch boxes with winders built in?

Yes — our watch winder safes combine secure storage with built-in winders, so your automatic watches stay wound inside a locked, protected environment. This is the ideal solution for collectors who want both security and convenience.

Will my watches fit in your boxes and winders?

Our winders and boxes are designed to accommodate standard men's and women's watch sizes, including oversized cases. The watch cushions are adjustable or spring-loaded to hold watches securely. If you have a particularly large or unusual watch, contact us with the case dimensions and we'll confirm compatibility.

How long will my order take to arrive?

We aim to dispatch orders as quickly as possible. Delivery times vary by destination — UK orders typically arrive within a few working days, while international delivery depends on the destination country and customs processing. You'll receive tracking information once your order has been dispatched.

What warranty do Tempus products come with?

All Tempus products are covered by our 3 year warranty as standard. This is a return-to-base warranty, meaning you return the item to us if it needs repair and we return it to you once fixed.

What is your returns policy?

We offer a 30-day change of mind return period — extended from the statutory 14 days as a goodwill gesture. Items must be unused, in their original undamaged packaging with all accessories and documentation. Custom-built and personalised items are excluded from change of mind returns.

What if my item arrives faulty or damaged?

If your item arrives faulty, damaged or incorrectly described, please contact us straight away with your order number and details of the problem. We'll arrange a repair, replacement or refund in line with your statutory rights and our 3 year warranty.
