How to choose a luxury watch box

Start with how many watches you own now, then add a few slots for the ones you’ll buy next. A 6 or 8 watch box suits a growing collection. If you already own 10 or more, a 12 or 18 watch box saves you from buying twice.

Next, think about where the box will live. A glass lid looks great on a dresser or shelf. A solid lid keeps dust and light off your watches if the box sits in a wardrobe.

Finishes and linings

Our boxes come in piano black, cherry gloss, natural and dark walnut, burl walnut, black oak, carbon fibre and crocodile-print finishes. Inside, you’ll find soft velvet and suede-style linings in beige, grey and mink. These are gentle on the case and strap, and they show off steel, gold and two-tone watches well.

Locks and security

Many of our watch boxes have a key lock on the front. If you want more protection, take a look at our biometric fingerprint watch boxes for 8 and 10 watches. Neither type replaces a safe, but both keep your collection away from casual access.

Looking after automatic watches?

A watch box stores your watches. It doesn’t keep an automatic running. If you wear several automatics in rotation, a watch winder is worth a look. For trips, our watch cases and rolls are the better choice.

A gift that gets used

A luxury watch box is a popular gift for Father’s Day, birthdays and milestone moments. It suits anyone who owns even two or three good watches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Tempus watch winders, storage and ordering.

How many watches should my watch box hold?

Pick a box with a few spare slots. If you own six watches, an 8-watch box leaves room for your collection to grow. Tempus boxes hold from 5 to 18 watches, so there's a size for every collector — whether you're storing a Rolex Submariner, an Omega Seamaster, or a growing collection of Seikos.

Are Tempus watch boxes lockable?

Many are. Most use a simple key lock on the front, and we also have biometric boxes that open with your fingerprint for extra security. All Tempus watch boxes come with our 3-year warranty covering locks, hinges, and linings.

Will a watch box scratch my watches?

No. Each watch sits in its own cushioned slot with a soft velvet or leather lining, so your watches never touch each other. The cushions are removable and adjustable to fit everything from a 36mm Tudor Black Bay to a 44mm Breitling Navitimer.

What's the difference between a watch box and a watch winder?

A watch box stores and displays your watches safely. A watch winder keeps an automatic watch running by rotating it — for example, a Rolex Daytona needs 650 TPD bi-directional. Many collectors use both: a winder for daily-wear automatics and a box for the rest of the collection.

Do Tempus watch boxes come with a warranty?

Yes, all Tempus watch boxes include a 3-year warranty covering manufacturing defects. If anything goes wrong with the lock, hinges, or lining in normal use, we'll repair or replace it.

Do you offer free UK delivery on watch boxes?

Yes, all UK orders ship free in protective packaging. Your watch box arrives pristine and ready to use. Full details are on our shipping page.

What is a watch winder, and how does it work?

A watch winder is a device that gently rotates an automatic watch to help keep its movement wound while it is not being worn. Automatic watches use a rotor to wind the mainspring, and a watch winder provides movement that can help maintain their power reserve.

Do I need a watch winder for my automatic watch?

A watch winder is optional rather than essential. It is most useful if you rotate between several automatic watches or want to reduce how often you reset the time and calendar after a watch stops. A watch can also be allowed to stop and then wound and set according to its manufacturer's instructions. Explore our range in the watch winders collection.

Can a watch winder be used with any watch?

Watch winders are designed for automatic mechanical watches. Standard quartz watches do not need winding, and a winder cannot wind a traditional manual-wind watch. For an automatic watch, check the manufacturer's recommended winding direction and turns per day before choosing your settings.

What does turns per day (TPD) mean on a watch winder?

Turns per day, often shortened to TPD, describes the number of rotations a watch winder makes over a day. Different automatic movements have different winding requirements, so use your watch manufacturer's guidance rather than assuming one setting suits every watch. Tempus winders offer programmable TPD settings to match your specific movement.

Which winding direction should I choose?

Automatic watch movements may wind clockwise, counterclockwise or in both directions. Choose a watch winder with settings that match your watch's requirements. If you are unsure, check with the watch manufacturer or an authorised service centre.

Are Tempus watch winders noisy?

No. Tempus watch winders use quiet precision motors designed to run whisper-quiet, making them suitable for a bedroom or office. Many of our customers keep their winders on a nightstand without any disturbance.

How do I choose a watch winder for my collection?

Start with the number of automatic watches you want to keep wound, then check winding settings, cushion fit, power options and dimensions. For a collection containing different movements, look for independently adjustable settings so each watch can receive the appropriate winding programme. Browse by capacity in our watch winders collection.

What is the difference between a watch winder and a watch box?

A watch winder rotates automatic watches to help keep them wound. A watch box provides organised storage without winding the movement. Choose a winder for convenience between wears, or a watch box when your priority is storing and displaying your collection. See our luxury watch boxes for storage options.

What should I look for in a watch travel case?

Look for a secure closure, a suitable fit and compartments that keep watches separated. Check that the case accommodates your watches' case sizes and straps or bracelets. A travel case can help protect against everyday knocks and scratches, but it should not be treated as theft protection. Our watch cases and travel rolls are designed for exactly this.

What should I check before buying a safe for luxury watches?

Check the safe's security certification, dimensions, installation requirements and storage capacity. If it includes watch winders, also check their settings and power requirements. Before buying, ask your insurer whether the specific safe and its installation meet the requirements for your collection. A safe's grade alone does not guarantee insurance cover. Explore our watch winder safes.

Do you sell watch boxes with winders built in?

Yes — our watch winder safes combine secure storage with built-in winders, so your automatic watches stay wound inside a locked, protected environment. This is the ideal solution for collectors who want both security and convenience.

Will my watches fit in your boxes and winders?

Our winders and boxes are designed to accommodate standard men's and women's watch sizes, including oversized cases. The watch cushions are adjustable or spring-loaded to hold watches securely. If you have a particularly large or unusual watch, contact us with the case dimensions and we'll confirm compatibility.

How long will my order take to arrive?

We aim to dispatch orders as quickly as possible. Delivery times vary by destination — UK orders typically arrive within a few working days, while international delivery depends on the destination country and customs processing. You'll receive tracking information once your order has been dispatched.

What warranty do Tempus products come with?

All Tempus products are covered by our 3 year warranty as standard. This is a return-to-base warranty, meaning you return the item to us if it needs repair and we return it to you once fixed.

What is your returns policy?

We offer a 30-day change of mind return period — extended from the statutory 14 days as a goodwill gesture. Items must be unused, in their original undamaged packaging with all accessories and documentation. Custom-built and personalised items are excluded from change of mind returns.

What if my item arrives faulty or damaged?

If your item arrives faulty, damaged or incorrectly described, please contact us straight away with your order number and details of the problem. We'll arrange a repair, replacement or refund in line with your statutory rights and our 3 year warranty.
